✉️ Text messages (SMS): what you need to know

Who gets your texts, what riders see, how length and segments count, and how text messages are billed.

Text messages reach riders fast, which helps with urgent news such as a cancelled lesson. Hopoti never sends texts by itself: every text is one your stable sends. For the steps, see Send an email or text message to riders.

This feature is available on certain plans

Text messages are available on the Growth, Pro and Ultimate plans. New features like this aren't part of earlier plans (from before September 2026). Message our team to get access.

What riders see in a text message

  • Sender: Hopoti. In the US and Canada, texts come from a phone number instead.

  • Your stable's name first: every text starts with it, for example "Horizon Stables: The indoor arena is closed on Saturday." Preview shows the text exactly as riders get it.

  • No replies: riders can't reply to a text, so say how to reach you if you need an answer.

The message window with Text Message chosen: ten recipient names plus 35 more, the note Clients can't reply to text messages sent from Hopoti, the text box with an example message, the counter showing 1 SMS and 15 characters left in this SMS, and the Preview starting with Hopoti Horizon Stables:.

Who gets your text messages

  • Riders with a phone number on their client card. Riders without one are listed under It is not possible to send a message to following users.

  • Service texts go to everyone you selected.

  • Marketing texts only reach riders who have given your stable marketing consent for text messages, which is separate from email consent. The client card shows it under Marketing consent - SMS.

  • A text to a child account without its own phone number goes to the parent's number.

  • Riders you added yourself without an email address (preliminary clients) can't get texts.

How text message length and segments count

A text is sent in segments, which the rider's phone joins back into one message. How much fits in a segment depends on the characters you use:

Your text

A one-segment text holds

Each segment of a longer text holds

Plain text, with no emoji or special characters

160 characters

153 characters

Text with at least one emoji or other special character

70 characters

67 characters

  • Your stable's name counts. It's part of the length, and the counter already includes it.

  • One emoji shortens every segment. A single emoji or special character switches the whole text to the shorter segments. For example, adding one horse emoji to a text of 2 SMS made it 3 SMS.

  • Segments count per rider. Each segment to each rider is one message: 2 segments to 30 riders is 60 messages. Send SMS shows the total before anything is sent.

A text with a horse emoji at the end: the counter shows 3 SMS and 26 characters left in this SMS, and the Preview shows the stable's name, the text and the emoji.

How text messages are billed

On the Growth plan, text messages are usage based. The Pro and Ultimate plans include an SMS allowance, and texts beyond it are usage based. Usage is counted in messages (each segment to each rider), and only delivered text messages are billed.

The Send SMS window: You're about to send an SMS to 45 recipients, with Message length: 174 characters (3 segments), Recipients: 45, Total messages: 135, and the buttons Send 135 messages and Cancel.

See how many text messages you've sent

In Clients > Message history, select SMS and set the From and To dates. SMS segments billed shows the total for those dates, and Segments the count for each send. More on Message history: Send an email or text message to riders.

Some situations work a little differently:

If your stable is in the US, Canada or Australia

The law in the US, Canada and Australia requires an opt-out line, so Hopoti adds "Reply STOP to opt out." at the end of every marketing text there. The line can't be removed and counts towards the length. Riders who reply STOP don't get your marketing texts after that.

If a text message fails

In Message history, Failed means the text didn't reach the rider's phone. Failed texts aren't billed. Check the phone number on the client card and send again if it was wrong. If texts to a correct number keep failing, message our team in the chat with the date and time of the send and the rider's name.
